2017 Selection Trials at Weymouth

Have just returned from a great four days in Weymouth where the team were participating in the selections for the Worlds and Europeans teams and the team have certainly made their mark J against the 79 sailors that were competing!

Day 1 was sailed in light medium winds which certainly benefited some of our smaller sailors – Charlie made most of the running in the first race and found himself in 9th position when he crossed the finish line. It was the turn of Thicome and Jamie in race 2 where Thicome shocked the fleet by winning the race and Jamie was close on his heels in 4th. It was then the turn of Athina in the last race of the day to take 2nd place to end a fantastic day 1 with 4 of our sailors in the top 20.

Day 2 was the day for the heavier sailors with the wind coming in and the race being taken out into the bay where our lake ripples were no match to the waves that the team experienced J! Athina made the most of these conditions and managed to move her position up to the Worlds spots. It was certainly a long day though with 4 races sailed and 6 hours being spent on the water – the team were certainly glad to be back on dry land!

Day 3 was a day that you could have bet on for a May Bank holiday with the rain making its presence felt in full force – all I can say is that I’m glad I was able to nurse my can of coke in the warmth and dry of the club house having seen Vagelis come dripping off the water! This day proved to be Keelin’s day where she rapidly climbed up the leader board to put herself into Europeans contention – far exceeding her wildest dreams!

Day 4 the sun decided to come back out although unfortunately the wind decided it didn’t want to play and much to the relief of Athina / Keelin the racing was abandoned for the day which meant that the team ended up with 4 sailors (Athina, Keelin, Thicome and Jamie) in the top half of the fleet with Athina / Keelin both being given places in the UK European team.

In all the team Saskia, Jesse, Charlie, Jamie, Thicome, Keelin and Athina had a great time and really bonded as a group over dinner with the Vagelis evening briefing showing them further tips as to how to go faster. At the end of the day we ended up with 5 of our sailors gaining top 10 places in a race and for 3 of these they have only been competing in the main fleet for a year – which certainly caught people’s attention. I think we can safely say people now know about our team and I’m looking forward for the upcoming inland championships in two weeks time.
