Well what a weekend – as you can see by the video (https://vimeo.com/210242945) we had a fantastic venue for the Spring Champs and the sun put in a very welcome appearance. However for our poor team the concept of skyscraper size waves was a very daunting prospect with little Oppies very easily being lost in the troughs J! Our intrepid sailors set off in the battle bus and headed down to the Torbay on the South coast – little did they know what a brisk easterly wind could do to an open stretch of water. Bravely everyone set out on the water managing to find some exhilaration surfing down the back of 2 metre waves – although unfortunately for some it meant that it wasn’t only the sea that was looking green! Managing to survive day one – the conditions became even bigger on day two but to their credit everyone headed out again – although Charlie was seen to be uttering prayers for the wind to die down just a little bit. With the heavier conditions we were always going to be seeing the older and heavier kids at the front and leading the team in 10th place and 2nd girl was Maria Athina. Jamie was next in 46th with Jesse and Saskia always pushing him in 47th and 51st which meant that half of our sailors were in the top half of the fleet. Thicome and Sam unfortunately turned a little too green to compete in all the races but along with Ollie gained some great sea sailing experiences and finally Charlie led home the U11s to take the second team trophy. All in all a fantastic event with the added bonus that Jamie was also selected to represent the GBR junior team at the Irish Nationals.
